Mayor of the County of Cork

Cllr Tim Lombard was today (June 24th 2011) elected Mayor of the County of Cork for the year 2011-12 and at 35 years of age, the Fine Gael member is the youngest holder of the office.
Representing the Carrigaline Electoral Area, Cllr. Lombard was first co-opted to Cork County Council in 2003 when he was nominated by his party to replace Simon Coveney TD. He was subsequently re-elected in the local government elections 2004 and 2009.
Cllr Lombard comes from a FG family background with strong connections also in the farming community in Minane Bridge, Macra na Feirme and Tracton GAA. His uncle, Pat Lombard was a member of Cork County Council for 19 years.
The new County Mayor was proposed by Cllr Michael Hegarty, the FG party leader on CCC and seconded by Carrigaline Area colleague Cllr John A. Collins FG. He was elected unanimously having gained cross party support and was unopposed.
Cllr Noel Collins, Independent member for Midleton Electoral area was elected Deputy Mayor on the proposal of Cllr Hegarty and Cllr Kevin Murphy FG, the outgoing Mayor. He was also elected unopposed to replace Cllr John O'Sullivan, FG member for Skibbereen Electoral Area.
First elected to Midleton Town Council in 1967 and to Cork County Council in 1974, Cllr Collins is the longest serving member of the 48 seat council.
The Mayor serves a 12 month term and is elected at the Annual General Meeting of Council in June. Under the 2001 Local Government Act, the title of Chairman changed to 'Mayor of the County of Cork', making Councillor Paula Desmond the first Mayor of the County in 2002. Coincidentally, Cllr. Desmond was the first woman to be elected to the Chair of CCC in 1994.
