Details of Commission: Ger O'Neill was awarded this commission by Skibbereen Urban District Council under the Per Cent for Art Scheme in March 1998. He completed a roadside sculpture which, very appropriately derives much of its form and meaning from the iconography of road signs. Each tree element in the sculpture is three metres tall. The trunk sections are made up of stainless steel bar, bunched together and slightly kinked. Each tree/sign contains a symbol, loosely translated from the technical accuracy of standard road signs. The symbol is cut through the two panels of copper, creating interesting open spaces in each tree. The panels of copper are patinated green, contrasting with the vertical, buched stalks of stainless steel which form the supporting stalks for the sculptures.
