Cork South Division
The Cork South Division serves a population of 93,604 and an area of 2,015 square kilometres. It is an area of great diversity in terms of population density and physical, economic and social profile. The divisional headquarters are located at County Hall, while the administrative area comprises the electoral areas of Midleton, Macroom and Bandon. The division is served by a Director and both Executive and Strategic Policy Committees, which comprise the elected members of the relevant area and representatives from the sectoral interests relevant to the functions of the division.
The towns of Midleton, Youghal, Cobh, Bandon, Macroom and Kinsale are administered by town councils. Agriculture, industry and tourism are the main economic functions within the division. The coastal zone is particularly popular with tourists, and there is a very high demand for holiday and second homes in the area.
The roads, water, housing, recreation and coastal services of the South Division are overseen from County Hall. Five area offices, which are situated throughout the division in Bandon, Macroom, Kinsale, Midleton and Youghal support the divisional office. Each area office is managed by a senior executive engineer, with the support of an executive or assistant engineer, district supervisor and administrative staff.
In town council areas, the senior executive or executive engineer also serves as the town engineer, which facilitates co-operation and co-ordination between the town councils and the County Council. Each area office is an essential aspect of the South Division. They act as a first port of call for the public, and manage a wide range of operational services.
