    Bright Sparks Schools accept their 1st Green Flag for Litter & Waste Prevention

    115

     65% of schools in Cork County are now registered to the Green Flag programme. 115 Flags for Litter & Waste and water conservation have been awarded. Scoil Eoin in Ballincolig has received a Green Flag for Transport. Many schools continue to work on energy & water conservation and travel to school themes. All schools were sent copies of a new Water Conservation Guide written especially for schools by Dr M. Stack. Several workshops have been held already this year for teacher co-ordinators. These events took place in Skibbereen, Mallow, Mitchelstown, Clonakilty. Further workshops for the green schools committees are being planned.

    Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The promotes environmental management and sustainable development education for schools. The approach is a combination of learning and action for improving the environments of schools and their local communities. The programme influences the lives of young people, school staff, families, NGOs.  The programme is implemented by An Taisce with the assistance and sponsorship of local authorities.

     2011 Registration & Assessments

    A new system is in place this year. All registration & renewals can be done online and paper 'free'. Please visit the greenschools.org web site. New registration must be submitted by December 1st 2011. Renewals by 1st March 2012. One awards cermony will be held in May.  Assessment visits are replaced by 'a general visit' to be arrangement between now and March . Contact
