The main provisions in the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) (Amendment) Regulations 2001 provide for:
- the period of grant of a first provisional licence for which application was made in the period 25th April, 2001 to 10th June, 2001should be 90 days beginning on the day on which the licence was granted, and following submission of a theory test certificate, for the balance of two years or one year as appropriate. Please note that where a person is issued with a 90-day licence and subsequently submits a theory test certificate and applies to extend the period of the provisional licence, no charge will apply.
- where application is made for a driving licence and the applicant had applied for a first provisional licence on or after 25th April, 2001, a valid theory test certificate for the category/categories concerned must accompany the driving licence application if such a valid theory test certificate has not already been submitted.
- where application is made for a first provisional licence on or after 11th June, 2001 a valid theory test certificate for the category/categories concerned must accompany the application if such a valid theory test certificate has not already been submitted.
- three tests will apply i.e. one test covering licence categories A, B, M, W, one test for category C and one test for category D. Sub-categories and categories with trailer entitlement are covered by the test for the category.

Postal Bookings
Send the completed application form with your postal order or cheque to the following address - PO Box 144, Drogheda, County Louth.
Postal Orders and cheques must be payable to Driver Theory Testing Service.
Make a note of the date you post your application and if after 14 days you have not received an appointment notification, please contact 1890 606 106 immediately. If you don't you may miss your appointment and lose your fee.
If you wish to reschedule or cancel your theory test appointment, you must give us at least 4 working days notice or you will lose your fee. For example, to reschedule or cancel a test booked on Friday you must let us know on the Monday.

When you arrive to take the Driver Theory test you will need to have a valid form of identification. Please note for a "Category C" and/or "Category D" test you must have a current Irish driving licence or one from another EU Member State, or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway.
