Sources of Funding for Heritage Projects:
Listed below and categorised for ease of use are a number of different funding sources to get your heritage project up and running. Additional information on sources for funding is provided under section 5 below.
1: General (Community and Heritage Projects/Research)
- Cork County Council Amenity and Recreation Grants Scheme
The general aim of this Scheme is to encourage works and public amenity schemes for the benefit of residents in the County of Cork. The works that qualify for consideration for these grants include the provision or improvement of amenities and the provision of community facilities. (i.e. tidy town projects)
- Cork County Council Community Fund
Cork County Council has established a Euro1 million fund to support community projects and initiatives. Allocations from the fund will be made to Community groups, sporting organisations and local organisations who propose to undertake projects in their areas. The closing date for applications is 29th February 2012.
- Cork County Council Community Grants Scheme
The aim of this Scheme is to support community groups and local organisations in County Cork who wish to undertake infrastructural projects which will improve the range and/or quality of community based facilities within their area.
- Heritage Council Grant Schemes
The Heritage Council grant schemes are advertised yearly in September and cover these 3 areas - 1) Heritage Research; 2) Heritage Management and 3) Heritage Education, Community and Outreach.
- Ireland Funds
The Ireland Funds is dedicated to supporting programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, education and community development throughout the island of Ireland. The closing date for this year's applications are 30/03/12.
- Local Development Agencies (Leader Funding)
Each Leader Group operates a grants programme to support local community initiatives. Details of these can be found on their individual websites.
- Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund
Ifyou have a project or initiative that could contribute to increasing local levels of environmental awareness or one which promotes building greener more sustainable communities - you may qualify for financial assistance from the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund.
2: Wildlife and Nature
- Conservation Volunteers Ireland
Conservation Volunteers Ireland is a nationwide voluntary organisation dedicated to working with local people for the environment. They carry out nature conservation projects on private and public lands covering anything from woodland/hedgerow management to invasive species control and river clean ups.
- European Union LIFE+ Nature & Biodiversity Programme
The LIFE programme is the EU's funding instrument for the environment.The Nature & Biodiversity component will co-finance best practice or demonstration projects that contribute to the implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives and the Natura 2000 network. In addition, it will co-finance innovative or demonstration projects that contribute to the implementation of the objectives of Commission Communication (COM (2006) 216 final) on Halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 - and beyond.
- The Heritage Council's Wildlife Research Fund
This involves the Biodiversity Fund which supports on-site habitat management activities that contribute to the protection, conservation, management and enhancement of biodiversity. It is directly supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
3: Built Heritage
- Cork County Council Conservation Grants Scheme
The objective of this scheme is to assist the owner or occupier of a structure which is protected with the conservation of that structure. Please be advised, however, that this scheme is currently suspended on a nationwide basis until further notice.
- Irish Georgian Society - Conservation Grants Scheme
The Irish Georgian Society provides grant-aid for the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, interiors, gardens and monuments. Their involvement ranges from commissioning conservation reports to raising funds for major projects.
- REPS 4 Traditional Buildings Grant Scheme
The Heritage Council, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, administers an annual grants scheme to REPS 4 participants for the conservation and repair of Traditional Farm Buildings on the basis of the contribution they make to the landscapes in which they are situated.
- Significant Places of Public Worship Grant Scheme
Administered by The Heritage Council, this is a grants scheme in respect of Significant Places of Public Worship.
- Special Conservation Grants
Run by The Heritage Council, these projects are generally for substantial works to conserve properties that are accessible to the public.
- Structures at Risk Fund
This is a Governement Run Scheme, the purpose of which is to to assist with works to safeguard structures protected under the Planning and Development Acts 2000-2010, and, in certain cases, works to safeguard structures within Architectural Conservation Areas, where, in the opinion of the Department, an urgent need for works to such structures has arisen and has been demonstrated.
- Thatching Grants
A grant of two thirds of the approved cost, up to a maximum of 3,810 euro, is available towards the cost of renovating thatched roofs of owner occupied houses. This is a Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government Scheme.
- Irish Revenue (Relief for Expenditure on Approved Buildings and Gardens)
Tax Relief is available to the owner/occupier of an approved building or an approved garden in repsect of expenditure incurred on the repair, maintenance or restoration of the approvied building or garden.
4: Cultural Heritage
- Arts Council Funding
Arts organisations, artists, and groups (i.e. a non-profit organisation or community group or those working in the health and education sector) may apply for financial support from the Arts Council. The Arts Council offer many different types of funding including Deis; Small Arts Festival Scheme and the Architecture Bursary Award
- Cork County Council Arts/Culture Grants Scheme
This scheme is designed to support arts activities and events at local or county level. Consideration will be given to those proposals that demonstrate a commitment to high standards of artistic excellence and which, in the opinion of Cork County Council, will stimulate interest in the arts, promote the knowledge, appreciation and practice in the arts or assist in improving standards in the arts.
- Cultural Contact Point - Culture Programme 2007-2013
The European Cultural Contact Point (CCP) Ireland provides information, advice and technical assistance to anyone in Ireland interested in applying to the European Commission for funding under the Culture Programme 2007-2013
- Culture Ireland Funding Scheme
Culture Ireland is a national agency, established in 2005 by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism to promote and advance Irish Arts in the International context using funds made available to them by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism
- European Culture Foundation (ECF) Grants
ECF's grants programme stimulates transnational cultural collaboration, artistic expression and the mobility of artists and other cultural players.

- Citizens Information Board
Citizens Information Board e-bulletin on funding. The Citizens Information Board is the statutory body which supports the provision of information, advice and advocacy on the broad range of social and civil services to the public
- Cork County 4 Community
Cork County Development Board in conjunction with Cork County Council and Cork County Community and Voluntary Forum launched the initiatives Cork County 4 Community and Cork County 4 Social Enterprise - free of charge search facilities to help you search for funding for any venture or project.
