    National Drawing Day at Methodist Hall, Kinsale,Saturday 19th May, 11 am to 3 pm

    Cobh Library Commemorates the Titanic Centenary

     

    As part of 2012's Titanic centenary commemorations, Cobh Library launched a design a library card competition in which we invited both adults and children to create an image that they felt best represented the theme Cobh and the Titanic 2012. The finalists in the junior category were Sarah Butler, Cormac O'Mahony and Zita O'Dwyer, with Tarek Sallabi, Daniel Keaney & Malwin Kupidura in the adult category. Each of the designs  have been mounted and are currently on display; the winning library cards have been made into special limited edition library cards that will be available exclusively from Cobh Library throughout the centenary year.     The Canon Sheehan Short Story Award at Cork County Library and Arts Service

     

    Cork County Library and Arts Service seeks new writing talent.     Events at Clonakilty Library

     

    The Knitting Group meets every Friday morning at 11.00am, to share tips and ideas over a cuppa. New members are always welcome.  The Book Club continues to meet on the last Tuesday of every month, at noon to discuss their latest reads. The Library Creative Writing Group is in full swing every second Thursday, to inspire and offer constructive feedback to any budding writers who might like to come along and join in  – further information at www.corkcoco.ie/library.

    Writing Workshops at Cork International Short Story Festival

    A group of writing workshops has been programmed to run in conjunction with the Cork International Short Story Festival this September. Each course runs for four days from 9.30am to 12.30pm..     2012 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition

     

     

    In 2012 Over The Edge is continuing its annual creative writing competition, open to both poets and fiction writers. The winning poems and the winning story will both be published in a special Over The Edge Tenth Birthday anthology which will be published during 2013. Entries should be sent to Over The Edge, New Writer of the Year competition, 3 Carbry Road, Newcastle, Galway, Ireland - contact details on a separate sheet. Criteria: fiction of up to three thousand words, three poems of up to forty lines, or one poem of up to one hundred lines. The closing date is Wednesday, August 8th, 2012.     Canon DSLR Workshop Barry Donnellan, Saturday 26th & Sun 27th May,   10am - 4pm

     

    The Cork Film Centre, Civic Trust House, hosts a Canon DSLR Workshop with Lighting Cameraman Barry Donnellan on Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th May from 10 am to 4 pm This two day workshop with international cameraman Barry Donnellan is aimed at people already shooting or interested in shooting with Canon DSLR's. Barry will cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques. A practical lighting session will also be included on the Saturday while an opportunity to actually shoot with Barry will be incorporated into the Sunday session. DSLR cameras will be provided for participants to share, but participants are encouraged to bring their own -   Booking is essential from 087 791 1316.

    The very first diyCork festival runs from Monday May 14th to Sunday 20th May with an eclectic programme of events in cork city and county. Organised on a voluntary basis with zero funding, the festival promises to casts a spotlight on Cork culture taking a fresh approach to festival programming underpinned by a strong Do It Yourself ethos. The diyCork programme features a vibrant mix of live music, performances, workshops, film, art and more to cater for all tastes and ages.     Irish Youth Choir /RTE Performing Groups Conductor in Training scheme

    The IYC and RTÉ Performing Groups are offering a Conductor in Training Scheme, a funded and extended trainee choral conducting programme for 2012/14.  In addition to access to IYC’s artistic director Greg Beardsell and to the all activities and programmes associated with the Irish Youth Choir, the successful applicant for this programme will have access to the RTE performing groups, in particular to the RTE Philharmonic Choir and Orchestras.  For the first time, a bursary is to be made available to assist the 2012/14 conductor in training to engage with this unique opportunity. The Irish Youth Choir 2012 residential course will run from 23rd June to 1st July. At its conclusion two concerts will be given - 30th June as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival and 1st July in St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin. In addition, the IYC will perform at Kilkenny Arts Festival on August 11th. The Irish Youth Chamber Choir will reassemble in the autumn of 2012 for a number of performances. The successful candidate will play the fullest part possible in all IYC activities as performer (s/he will sing with the choir) and understudy for Greg Beardsell. There will be an opportunity to conduct the IYC in one piece in public performances: other opportunities will arise to give additional support and training to singers during the annual residential course, during Irish Youth Chamber Choir rehearsals and in other Irish Youth Choir training contexts. Photographer and teacher, Doug DuBois has been working in partnership with the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh County Cork Ireland since 2009 through Sirius’ international Artist in Residency Programme funded by the Arts Council and Cork County Council. This partnership has lead to the development of his new body of work, “My Last Day At Seventeen” which takes as its focus a housing estate in Cobh. It provides a reliable guide to organisations involved in this growing and diverse field of arts practice. Through the searchable database, users can find resources and case studies of arts and health projects across Ireland and users can communicate with their peers and the public by uploading current news as part of the ongoing development of the website. artsandhealth.ie features vibrant and diverse examples of arts and health practice in Ireland.
