Mark Renn and Mick Thacker

  • Artworks by Mark Renn and Mick Thacker

     Title: Pegasus

Pegasus by Mark Renn & Mick Thacker

Artist Name: Mark Renn and Mick Thacker
    Year of Installation: 1999
    Dimensions: Each section is 800cm x 400cm
Medium: Copper, Steel, Plywood, Fibre Optic Lighting
    Location: Kinsale Road, N27
Details of Commission: Commissioned by Cork County Council with funding from the Per Cent for Art Scheme. The sculpture is in the form of a copper clad, steel artwork which frames the form of a winged horse from the sky behind, when three enigmatically shaped towers coincide. At night, fibre optic stars reveal Pegasus as a new constellation. The three towers, which create the illusory sky-horse, are shaped and riveted to suggest aeroplane wings; as if the sculpture had been carved from the wings of a jet from the nearby airport. The sculpture was sited during the eclipse of August 1999.

Artist Bio: Renn & Thacker specialise in site specific public art. The partnership's work is mainly in the field of sculpture and includes works in bronze, steel, fibre optics and architectural lighting design. Renn and Thacker's working method proceeds from an understanding of the physical and social context of the intended work.

Their practice is built upon, thorough research into the site. Renn & Thacker develop designs, taking the particular character and the needs of a given location as their starting point and often collaborate with other professionals to realise the work. Such an approach means that they are not tied to a specific material, medium or style. The partnership has a mixed portfolio and the range of skills they offer includes planning, consultancy, compiling feasibility studies/reports and project management. "Our starting point, rather than a particular medium or process is the site itself. With this approach and thorough collaboration, we strive to expand the limits of possibility."
