Opening Hours

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday - 10am-5:30pm.
  • Tuesday and Friday - 10am-7:30pm.
  • Closed on Saturdays and Mondays of bank holiday weekends.

Macroom Library offers a wide range of books for lending to adults and children, including books on tape, CDs and CD-ROMs for adults and children, covering various areas of education and hobbies.

The following newspapers and periodicals are available for viewing in the library:

  • the Irish Examiner, the Irish Times, the Evening Echo (Tuesdays and Fridays only), the Corkman, the Farmer's Journal, the Southern Star
  • Archaeology Ireland, Business & Finance, Hello, Here's Health, Homes & Gardens, Hot Press, Ireland's Own, The Irish Garden, Irish Homes, National Geographic.

Macroom Library has a collection of local history material covering Macroom and surrounding areas, as well as a general reference collection that includes the Electoral Register, ordinance survey maps, planning applications received, along with decisions made by Cork County Council and the County Development Plan, 2003.

A number of specialist collections are also held:

  • The Golden Collection
  • Plays by T. C. Murray
  • The Dan Joe Kelleher Archive on computer

Internet access is available on six PCs. Advance booking for this service is advisable.

Events

  • Storytime is held every Saturday and is presented by a member of library staff. 
  • The Penn Junior Book Club - meets once a month on Fridays from 4-5pm, and is hosted by Christine Cronin.
  • The Readers Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 11.30am, and is hosted by Paula Walker.
  • A Gramophone Recital is held on the second Monday of each month, usually in the morning, and is hosted by Peter O'Regan.
  • The Knitting Group is held at 11.30am on the first and third Thursdays of every month.
  • The library hosts occasional art exhibitions.
  • As part of the EU Direct Relay, the library holds a monthly event. Activities range from exhibitions to presentations by renowned local individuals.
  • Library events are periodically featured on the local television station, LTV.
  • Various activities are held throughout the year, including involvement in local festivals such as the Bealtaine Festival, the Summer Arts Programme and the Children's Book Festival.

This is a collection of Videotapes recorded in the 1980s and transferred to computer for easy viewing. Contents inlcude footage from Agricultural Shows, Drama / Pantomines, Sport Events etc. held in the Macroom and surrounding areas. This interesting collection can be viewed in the Library during opening hours.

EU Direct PC - Dedicated PC terminal for browsing EU websites and EU information.

Disability Access PC - This is a PC to aid people who are blind, visually impaired or with a learning disability. Specialised software (Zoomtext, Jaws, Kurzweil 1000 and 3000) enables the user to view functions and read material in large print format on screen.

Affinity Large Print Viewer - Material can be viewed in large print format. This medium is ideal for viewing bills or documents with small lettering and for writing letters. The machine is easy to use as itis manually controlled and staff can assist users.
