About Coastal Services


Cork County Council has responsibility for a coastline of 1100km. This stretches from the border with Kerry, near Ardgroom on the Beara Peninsula, to the east of Youghal. The Cork coastline includes nine inhabited islands, namely Dursey, Bear, Whiddy, Long, Heir, Cape Clear and Sherkin. Cork County Council has numerous responsibilities along this coastline, which include the following:

  • Maintenance, construction and operation of piers and harbours
  • Coastal protection
  • Beaches
  • Navigational aids
  • Visitor moorings
  • Operation of cable car (to Dursey Island)
  • Oil spill clean up operations. The following legislation applies to coastal activities and work:
  • Foreshore Act, 1933
  • Foreshore (Amendment) Act, 1992
  • Fisheries and Foreshore (Amendment) Act, 1998
