Cork County Council has responsibility for keeping the County's many piers, harbours, slipways and access points to a high standard. The Council is engaged in ongoing work to ensure the public's safety and enjoyment of County Cork's coastal amenities. In co-operation with local communities, the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and other statutory bodies, Cork County Council carries out minor and major structural works around the county. The main aims of these works are to assist and improve facilities for carrying out the following activities:
- Fishing
- Gaining access to the islands
- Various leisure and boating activities
- Aquaculture enterprises
- Other commercial shipping activities
In 1999, Cork County Council put in place Bye-Laws for the Regulation of the Harbour at Coastline of County Cork. These byelaws are aimed at ensuring the proper and safe usage of the piers and harbours under County Council control.
