Work in Progress

  • Pier and Harbour Works

    Cork County Council has carried out infrastructural works for the fishing industry and leisure interests including works at the following locations:

    • Keelbeg Pier, Union Hall
    • Garinish Pier, Beara Peninsula
    • Cloughland Slipway, Bear Island South Cork  
    • Slipway, Castletownsend
    • Ballycrovane Pier, Beara Peninsula
    • Goleen Pier
    • Gerahies Pier, Bantry
    • Durrus Pier,
    • Ahakista Pier
    • Pier and Slipway repairs at Dooneen Pier, Kinsale 2002 - Cost €150,000
    • Pier extension at Dooneen Pier, Kinsale 2003 - Cost €95,000
    • Knockadoon Slipway Extension 2000 - Cost €130,000
    • Ballycotton Breakwater repair 1999 - Cost €100,000
    • Tragumna Slipway 2004 - €200,000

    Work has also been carried out to improve access to the islands including Sherkin; Cunnamore and Heir; Colla and Long Island; Oileain na gCaorach on Bear Island; Cremery Pier, Whiddy Island; and piers for access to Dursey Island.

    Ongoing and proposed works include the following:

    • Crookhaven Pier
    • Schull Harbour Development
    • Ballycotton Harbour Development
       

    The highest priority in terms of Piers and Harbours in South Cork is the redevelopment of Ballycotton Harbour. This is an ambitious project likely to cost in excess of €6,000,000. The Part VIII Planning Process was completed in 2004. It is expected that the Foreshore Licence will issue before year end. This project will only go to construction if it is in receipt of a grant from Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources.
