A series of training events are planned for SMEs. Run in partnership with SCEAD . These events are aimed at business people dealing with waste and water issues and would like to reduce their costs.

Introduction Faced with tightening profit margins, businesses are constantly looking for ways to cut their costs. Reducing your waste through simple waste prevention procedures goes hand in hand with reducing operation costs. Savings can be realised through waste prevention, water conservation & energy efficiency. This short focused workshop will provide information on how to improve environmental performance and reduce associated costs. Advice will also be provided on how to ensure legal compliance with the Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009, which will impact on all businesses where food waste is produced. The workshop is targeted at Businesses in the Catering and Accommodation Sector (including hotels, bars, restaurants, supermarkets, nursing homes, and catering facilities in business/industry etc.

Each year Matt Murphy Director of Sherkin Island Marine Station in West Cork, hosts a very successful competition for primary schools in Munster. Themes on the environment & nature are displayed on posters or photographs formats and for judging. See results of competition in pdf below.

The 'Bin It!' educational programme for secondary schools across Ireland is designed to be taught through Civic Social and Political Education (CSPE) classes.
Students are invited to become involved and support the 2009 anti litter initiative. Young people are encouraged to become more responsible about the way they dispose of their gum, while learning to respect the local environment around them."

The Environment Directorate's Environmental Awareness & Research Unit won the Waste Management Initiative category at the 2008 Chambers Irelands 5th annual Excellence in Local Government Award at a ceremony (06/11/08) attended by over 520 local authorities officials and chamber representatives. The awards were held in association with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley T.D. said "This is the fifth year of Chambers Ireland's awards in association with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The awards aim to acknowledge and encourage innovation and best practice among Ireland?s local authorities and I am very pleased to be associated with them."

This is the third year of a week long environmental summer school. This year the event will be hosted in the Life Time Laboratory from July 6th - 10th 2009. The course covers various aspects of environmental education and involves fields trips to interesting places in the City & County.

Cork County Council & Fotawildlife Park are working together on a fun new project . Friday is Environment Day for Kids.
The summer camp for school has been sucessfully running at Fota for a number of years. In 2008, the Council and Fota WLP decided to introduce an appreciation of the environment theme into the summer school programme.
Arrangement for 2009 programme are in preparation.
