National Car Test (NCT)

  • National Car Test (NCT)

    National Car Test (NCT)

The National Car Test (NCT) was introduced on 4th January 2000

What are the benefits of car testing?

    • safer vehicles
    • improved reliability
    • improved fuel economy
    • cleaner air/less noise
    • potential for lower insurance costs

    What cars must be tested?

All cars, 4 years old or more must be tested and every two years thereafter

Where do I get my car tested?

There are forty-three test centres in Ireland. If your car is due to be tested the NCT should be writing to you with a test appointment. If however, you do not receive an appointment contact the NCT directly at 1890 412 413. Also book online at www.ncts.ie

What happens if I don't get my car tested?

You will be unable to tax a car liable for testing unless it has passed the test and you have obtained an NCT certificate. The certificate will have to be produced when applying for tax, and a disc displayed on your windscreen.
It is an offence to use a car liable for testing in a public place without an NCT certificate.
