  • Dunmanway Library

The stunning knitted GPO that Dunmanway Library's Knit and Natter group created to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising is on the move again... this time to grace the real GPO in Dublin.
The 6ft long replica which was originally created for display in the library during Easter 2016 was featured in many newspaper articles from The Southern Star to The Irish Times. It became a talking point on radio with an in-depth interview with Áine O'Brien group facilitator, about the piece and the group who created it on 103FM. It was also featured on TV3's Seven o'Clock Show.
All this publicity was bound to reach the eyes and ears of the staff of the real GPO, and during the summer Dunmanway Library was approached by Anna McHugh, Head of Corporate Communications in the GPO about the possibility of exhibiting the piece as part of their Christmas displays. The staff organising the collaboration were sworn to secrecy to keep it a surprise, and on Tuesday 15th November the display was unveiled to the public. It forms the centrepiece of the Christmas displays inside the main hall and looks stunning amid a snowy winter scene.
The Knit and Natter Ladies were invited to Dublin to the grand opening and had an amazing day and were treated like celebrities. They received a complimentary guided tour around the GPO Witness History centre and were treated to lunch.  The Knitted GPO will be on display in the main hall of the GPO, Dublin for the Christmas season and if you happen to be in the big smoke it's well worth a visit.
