Newspapers and Magazines
Almost all of Cork County Library's 28 branch libraries subscribe to at least one daily newspaper and a selection of magazines. The service's larger branch libraries subscribe to several daily and weekly newspapers and to a wide range of magazines, both of general and thematic interest. Newspapers and magazines are displayed in each library for use on the premises. In addition to newspapers on display in branch libraries, the library also subscribes to the following online newspaper services: The Irish Times (available on the Libraries Public Access PCs) and Library PressDisplay (this website provides access to over 500 full content digital replicas of newspapers and magazines from 70 countries in 37 languages)
Owing to limitations of storage space, back issues of newspapers are retained for only two to three months. At County Library HQ, however, back issues of the Irish Examiner and of the Irish Times are retained until they have been replaced by microfilm copies in the library's newspaper archive.
Most branch libraries subscribe to a selection of magazines and periodicals. Ephemeral titles are retained for a relatively short time, while more substantial titles are retained for up to a year. A pilot project to provide back issues of popular magazines for loan has recently been initiated, and if this proves successful, the service will be extended to other selected branches. For an overview of the newspaper and magazine titles stocked in any specific branch, select that branch library's profile.
The Cork County Library Reference Department subscribes to a wide range of learned journals and periodicals and maintains extensive archival runs of these titles for consultation at County Library HQ.
