Mallow Town Council has responsibility for the administration of the town of Mallow.  The Council works in partnership with the community, the private sector and the public sector to develop the town.  The economic, social and cultural well-being of the people is influenced by the capacity of the local authority to deliver an extensive range of public services.  It is an objective of the Town Council to continue to provide the maximum range of quality services to the people of the town. 

Mallow is the largest of the 9 Towns within Cork County which have Town Council status.  It is a thriving retail and commercial centre serving not only the surrounding residential area but also a larger catchment area stretching to the borders with County Limerick to the North and Kerry to the West.

Mallow Town Council as a local authority plays both a representational and operational role.  There are 9 Elected Members to Mallow Town Council.  These members were elected in June 2009.  In accordance with the Local Government Act 2001 elections take place every 5 years and will be held again in June 2014.

The functions performed by the elected members are called “reserved functions”.  These lay down the framework of policy under which the Town Manager operates.

Such functions include:

• Adoption of Annual Budget
• Making or Varying the Town Development Plan
• Adoption of Scheme of Letting priorities for the letting of Local Authority Houses
• Making, amending and revoking bye-laws
• Approval for borrowing money

The Manager, in making his decisions, must act in a way that is consistent with the policy, which has been established by the elected members while, at the same time, advising the members in relation to the performance of their reserved functions.
