N73 Mallow - Castletownroche Road NRA Approval For Facelift:

At yesterday's meeting of the Mallow-Fermoy Area Committee Cllr. Noel O Connor MCC Fine Gael was delighted to learn, that the NRA (National Roads Authority) has sanctioned 850,000 euros for the Realignment of the treacherous stretch of road, on the N73, between Mallow and Castletownroche, at Carrig, near Killavullen, which has been the scene of many tragic accidents.
Continuing Cllr. O Connor said “The NRA proposes the re-alignment of some 800 metres of road, along by Kilcanway Bridge and up to Carrig Cross. The NRA will publish the Part VII Planning Application with Cork County Council on to day Wednesday 9th Feb... This planning process will allow the general public to view the proposals, and to make observations. The plans for these proposals can be viewed at the Co. Council Offices in Annabelle in Mallow or at the NRA Regional Offices in Glenmora."
Continuing Cllr. O Connor said "This is great news for everyone who has to travel on this road, on the way to or from Mallow and Fermoy. It is hoped that the NRA will be able to negotiate with the land owners along this stretch, with a view to purchasing the necessary land needed to realign the road here. If this is not possible then Compulsory Purchase Orders will be put on the required land. I, along with all the other councillors in the Mallow -Fermoy Area travelled to Dublin some months ago to lobby the NRA on the need for improvements to the N73 here. It is great that we were listened to. I look forward to seeing the works commence later in the year."

"And the good news continues " Cllr. O Connor went on to say " as the NRA also announced, that in a few months time the NRA will be going for a Part VII Planning on another section of this N73 road, on the Fermoy side of Carrig. A sum of 1.4 Million euros has been set aside, to carry out this realignment and overlay, on the section of road from Ballygriffin to the Nano Nagle Centre and from there on to Castletownroche. This part of the road is in need of improvement and as a local Councillor for the area I am delighted with these proposed improvements. I look forward to seeing the Plans for this Bridgetown Upper/Castletownroche Overlay Scheme as it is technically called.  These works should help avoid further accidents in this area and provide safer driving conditions for people travelling on the Mallow to Fermoy road."
