  • Transportation Study

    Cork County Council and Mallow Town Council have commissed a Traffic and Transportation Study for the Mallow Area.  The aim of the study is to review  the transportation network and the associated demands with particular attention to the town centre area with the objective of determining the Transportation Management Improvements needed to cope with the anticipated continued expansion of the town that will result in growth in vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist traffic volumes.

    The Study shall take cognisance of various National, Regional and Local Plans.

    Overall Strategy of Mallow Traffic and Transportation Study

    The strategic aims of the Traffic and Transportation Study match those of the Mallow Special Local Area Plan 2007:

    1. Enhanced quality of life for all, based on high quality residential, working and recreational environments and sustainable land use and transportation patterns;
    2. Sustainable patterns of growth, reflecting the need to reduce energy consumption and emissions, together with efficient provision of social and physical infrastructure;
    3. Sustainable development of the town centre reflecting Mallow’s designation as a “hub” town serving not only the resident population but also the wider hinterland;
    4. Sustainable and balanced economic investment together with wise management of the town’s environmental and cultural assets; and
    5. Responsible guardianship of the town and its’ hinterland so that it can be handed on to future generations in a healthy state.

    Goals of Mallow Traffic and Transportation Study

    The key planning and sustainable development goals of the Traffic and Transportation Study match those of the Mallow Special Local Area Plan 2007 and to propose their implemtation ? for the time horizons of this Study:

    • The development of the town’s public transport system and road network so that most journeys within the urban area can be completed within about 15 minutes.
    • The development of facilities for pedestrians either on segregated routes or on footways beside routes for vehicular traffic so that most parts of the urban areas are accessible to all and are within a 20 minute walk (1.6km) from the town centre.
    • To provide a network of segregated cycle routes linking all parts of the urban area.
    • To provide a bus interchange facility with car parking, passenger information and shelter.
    • To provide enhanced access, car parking and bus interchange facilities for rail services in the town.
    • To encourage the development of facilities to meet the needs of through traffic using the national routes passing through the town.
