  • Twinning

Mallow is twinned with Tréguier in Brittany, France and Tinley Park, U.S.A.

    Tréguier:

In 1990 Mallow was twinned with Tréguier in Brittany, France. The official twinning took place with the signing of a Charter between the two towns at a special ceremony held on Sunday August 26th. Since that date there has been many very successful exchange visits between the towns.

Tréguier is in the Cotes d’Armor Region to the north of Brittany. Tréguier, which dates from the 6th century, developed around a monastery founded by Saint Tudwal (died c. 564).

It is a hilltop village, best known for its cathedral. The Cathedral Saint-Tugdual, a fine architectural masterpiece, also has a lovely cloister dating from the 15th century.

The town itself has many 15th and 16th century colombage houses, as well as some  imposing granite townhouses. Inhabitants of Tréguier are called Trécorrois. As of the census of 1999, the town had a population of 2,697
Tréguier is a good place for exploring the surrounding coastline, along the Coast of Pink Granite, and for excursions to the Isle of Bréhat.

Economy: Saw-milling, boat-building and flax stripping are carried on, together with trade in cereals, cloth, potatoes, etc. The port carries on fishing and small foreign trade.

Religious Festivals: Tro Breizh (Breton for “Tour of Brittany”) is a Catholic pilgrimage that links the towns of the seven founding saints of Brittany, including Tréguier, Saint Tudwal’s town.
The Pardon of Saint Yves is a major event. As Yves is patron saint of the legal profession, it attracts Catholic lawyers and judges from all over the world.

Notable Citizens: Tréguier was the birthplace of:

    • Ernest Renan (1823-1892), philosopher and historian of religion.
    • Ernest Hello (1828-1885), critic.

    Other citizens:

    • Joseph Savina (1901-1983), designer and sculptor, lived and worked here.

    Tinley Park

Mayor of Tinley Park, Mr. Ed. Zabrocki and the Mayor of Mallow. Cllr. Dan Joe Fitzgerald officially signed the twinning charter between the two towns on May 29th 2002.  This twinning has proved very beneficial to both sides with many exchange visits. The twinning process has given both towns the opportunity to forge links on economic, cultural and historical levels.

Tinley Park is located  at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Harlem Avenue, just a 35 – minute drive or short train ride from downtown Chicago. It has attracted prime business and the hospitality industry, along with the emergence of award-winning restaurants, a popular Convention Centre and a large selection of high-profile hotels. Tinley Park is home to major shopping areas serving the growing community and the surrounding region. The strong local economy – a diverse mix of retail, office, industry and entertainment businesses – has benefited both the residents and companies who have chosen to make Tinley Park their home.

Tinley Park is one of the fastest growing cities in the entire Midwest Region with a population over 58,000. Metro Chicago is one of the world’s finest transportation centres, and Tinley Park provides convenient access to O’Hare International Airport, Midway International Airport, and global intermodal facilities via two Interstates, and the Metra Rock Island Railroad.

Village officials have worked with the business community to revitalize the historic downtown area, developing carefully planned incentives to encourage new construction and façade improvements. The construction of an architecturally outstanding train station and an inviting town square has made this downtown area a popular venue for numerous community activities, attracting visitors from the entire area.

Tinley Park has a reputation as an outstanding village in which to live, work and play.
