Master Composting Course - Press Release & Photographs

MAYOR WILLIAM O'REGAN VISITS MALLOW COMMUNITY ORGANIC GROWERS.

Mayor William O’Regan visited the Mallow Community Organic Growers to inspect the Composting units and the newly planted bee garden. Commenting on his visit the Mayor stated ‘this project is the true essence of what Community is meant to be. Everybody helping one another and working to produce local organic food. The Composting course is a further asset to the project and a great learning on how to stop food waste. Home composting is an ideal local and sustainable, management option for food and garden waste providing it is done correctly. Mallow Town Council are delighted to be associated with Cork County Council Environmental Awareness Department, and the Composting Course as devised by the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme’.

Margaret Desmond stated ‘the work day on Saturday reminded me of the threashing day when I was very young when all the neighbourhood came to help with the harvest. The work was done and it was great fun. We are delighted to have a section of the garden to promote bees and to encourage bees to the garden for pollination of crops.

Composting Questions

The Composting Course is currently training 32 people to become Master Composters. The tutor, Craig Benton, keeps the group enthused with his natural interest & love of compost and the entire environment as a system that we humans need to treat with respect to ensure sustainability. The training continues until September and we invite people who have questions about composting to send them to Margaret Desmond, RAPID Office, Town Hall, Mallow and the replies will be printed on the Mallow Star each week and on the www.mallow.ie website.. This is an opportunity to trouble shoot your composting chalanges so send in your questions.

Composting Demonstations and open day Sept 2010.

There will be an Open House session of Workshops for the Public Saturday 18th Sept. 2010 at 2.00p.m..
