A celebratory event was held by the Cork Older Persons Council (OPC) under the Cork Age Friendly Programme on the 14thJune in the Walter Raleigh Hotel Youghal. The Deputy Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Martin Coughlan opened the event and welcomed over 250 Older Persons from all over the County.
Mr. Jim Daly, Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People was also in attendance and highlighted some of the key issues affecting Older Persons in the county. The event commenced at 10a.m. with an exhibition from agencies and organisations that provide relevant services. This provided an ideal opportunity for people to network, learn and share ideas. The event was attended by Cork County Council’s Divisional Manager Mr. James Fogarty and Director of Service Mr. Niall Healy who is also the newly appointed Chair of the Cork County Age Friendly Alliance.
Speakers on the day included; Ms. Liz Maddox, Chair of the Cork County OPC, Ms. Catherine McGuigan, Chief Officer of the Age Friendly Programme, Ms. Fiona Hayes, Age Friendly Programme Manager, Cork County Council and Ms. Caroline Casey, Road and Water Safety Officer, Cork County Council. The Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Christy Roche, PRO Cork OPC.
The Cork County OPC was established in 2015 by Cork County Council as part of the Cork Age Friendly Programme. The OPC is made up of an executive committee and a wide group of members who meet annually to celebrate positive ageing and their achievements.
