Council Publication Explores the Heritage Towns and Villages of County Cork

A group of people holding a book

Cork County Council has launched the 10th installment of its heritage publication series entitled ‘Heritage Towns and Villages of County Cork’.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Danny Collins noted

Earlier this year, members of the public, community groups and historians from throughout the county were invited to submit details of their hometown or village for inclusion in the publication. The wonderful response to this call, coupled with the expertise of author Denis Power has produced an outstanding insight into the place we call home. Cork is a county that we are all very proud of and this book gives a great overview and understanding of so much of the wonderful heritage that the county has to offer. I congratulate all those who contributed.

The County of Cork contains over 300 identifiable settlements. Some of these are recent, while some can trace their origins back over many hundreds of years. Close to 200 settlements were already well established by the time of the first Ordnance Survey mapping of the county, almost 200 years ago, in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Towns and villages in the County of Cork are full of places of wonder, combined with characters spanning the centuries. Many heritage buildings survive within these settlements as do many of the customs, for example, weekly markets, fairs and much more.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey also spoke of the importance of recording the history and heritage of the county’s towns and villages, noting,

Since 2013, and with the support of the Heritage Council, Cork County Council’s Heritage Unit has been undertaking a range of books under ‘The Heritage of County Cork Publication Series’. This most recent addition, which features over 230 settlements from throughout the County of Cork, gives a superb overview of what can be found in towns and villages throughout the county. These heritage features and attributes define our locality and underpin each community.

‘Heritage Towns and Villages of County Cork’ retails at €10 and is now available from your local bookshop. For more information on these and other Cork County Council heritage initiatives visit the Heritage section or email corkheritage@corkcoco.ie

Tá an 10ú mír dá sraith foilseachán oidhreachta seolta ag Comhairle Contae Chorcaí dar teideal ‘Heritage Towns and Villages of County Cork’.

Ag labhairt dó ag an seoladh, dúirt Méara Chontae Chorcaí, an Comh. Danny Collins “Níos luaithe i mbliana, tugadh cuireadh don phobal, do ghrúpaí pobail agus do staraithe ó gach áit sa chontae sonraí a mbaile dúchais nó a sráidbhaile a chur isteach le cur san áireamh san fhoilseachán. Thug an freagra iontach ar an nglao seo, mar aon le saineolas an údair Denis Power,  léargas iontach ar an áit seo atá mar bhaile dúinn. Is contae é Corcaigh a bhfuilimid ar fad ana-bhródúil as agus tugann an leabhar seo léargas agus tuiscint iontach ar an oiread sin den oidhreacht iontach atá le tairiscint ag an gcontae. Tréaslaím leo siúd go léir a chuir leis.”

Tá breis agus 300 lonnaíocht inaitheanta i gContae Chorcaí. Tá cuid acu seo nua go leor, agus is féidir le cuid acu eile a mbunús a rianú siar leis na céadta bliain. Bhí beagnach 200 lonnaíocht seanbhunaithe cheana féin faoin am a rinneadh an chéad léarscáiliú de chuid na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis ar an gcontae, beagnach 200 bliain ó shin, sa chéad leath den naoú haois déag.

Tá bailte agus sráidbhailte i gContae Chorcaí lán d’áiteanna iontais, in éineacht le carachtair ó na céadta bliain. Maireann go leor foirgneamh oidhreachta laistigh de na lonnaíochtaí seo chomh maith le go leor de na nósanna, mar shampla, margaí seachtainiúla, aontaí agus go leor eile.

Labhair Príomhfheidhmeannach Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí, Tim Lucey freisin ar cé chomh tábhachtach atá sé  stair agus oidhreacht bhailte agus shráidbhailte an chontae a thaifeadadh, ag tabhairt faoi deara, “Ó 2013, agus le tacaíocht ón gComhairle Oidhreachta, tá Aonad Oidhreachta Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí ag tabhairt faoi raon leabhar faoin teideal ‘The Heritage of County Cork Publication Series’. Tugann an leabhar is déanaí seo, ina bhfuil breis agus 230 áitrithe ó gach cearn de Chontae Chorcaí, léargas iontach ar a bhfuil le fáil i mbailte agus i sráidbhailte ar fud an chontae. Sainmhíníonn na gnéithe agus na tréithe oidhreachta seo ár gceantar agus cuireann siad taca faoi gach pobal.”

Tá ‘Heritage Towns and Villages of County Cork’ ar díol ar €10 agus tá sé ar fáil anois ó do shiopa leabhar áitiúil.
