The County Council Municipal Districts of West Cork & Bandon-Kinsale have launched the fourth year of the Special Music Event Scheme, a community initiative which endeavours to bring the business and voluntary music communities together to promote their local town.
Following on from three very successful years where an excellent standard of music was provided by the various Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann music groups and Brass and Pipe Bands, events this year will occur in various venues in and around Kinsale, Bandon, Bantry, Clonakilty, Dunmanway and Skibbereen.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gerard Patrick Murphy commenting at the launch said “Cork County Council recognises the contribution that these music events make to the lives of people around the county with clear cultural and social benefits as well as a positive effect on local economic activity. The scheme aims to create opportunities for engagement and participation in the Arts and involves a significant amount of voluntary support from the local community and businesses which will in turn enhance these towns vibrancy and promote them as visitor destinations.”
Each town applied for funding to hold 4 music events, free of charge to the public, on the town streets during the months of June, July and August, and a mixture brass and reed band music covering a wide genre of popular music and songs as well as traditional music, song and dance will be performed during these events. There has been a great level of interest and enthusiasm shown by the local business associations and the community music groups who have come together under this scheme to ensure a successful and enjoyable outcome for all.
