Technical drawing of Mallow Bridge with the proposed boardwalk in red.

To date completed works on western side of Mallow Bridge include: relocation of existing ducting; installation of new service ducts; installation of new water mains; removal of electrical poles; undergrounding of electrical lines; demolition of the disused public toilets. Works have also been advanced on the installation of foundations for the retaining wall at the northern end of the Boardwalk, and pointing and cleaning of the existing bridge.
The northbound lane on Mallow Bridge was closed during the school mid-term break from 28th October to 4th November to facilitate the installation of new traffic light and electrical ducting on the eastern side of the bridge. This work was completed and the bridge was reopened to two way traffic on 4th November.
Fabrication of the steel boardwalk structure will take place off site. Given the horizontal and vertical curvature of the bridge and complexity of the structure, the boardwalk will take a number of months to fabricate. The outstanding works remaining on the project include: new paving and changes to the existing footpaths at the Park Road junction; upgrading of the traffic lights; installation of the boardwalk; final surfacing. Most of these works will be carried out in conjunction with the installation of the boardwalk. The contractor will demobilise from site in November and recommence in 2020. There will be no traffic disruption caused by the works in the busy Christmas period. It is envisaged that the boardwalk will be installed in Summer 2020.
Cork County Council will continue to give future updates on the project. Road Closures and Detours will be updated on Map Alerter. Any queries email
