Celebrate The Art of Living at the Bealtaine Festival this May!
Cork County Council Library and Arts Services are offering an array of free arts events and activities as part of the Bealtaine Festival this May. Age and Opportunity’s Bealtaine Festival is Ireland’s National Celebration of the arts and creativity as we age.
In Macroom Library, music lovers are invited to take a trip ‘Down Memory Lane’ with Alf McCarthy and Linda Kenny on 12th May at 11am. This popular event, originally developed in Douglas Library, is an enjoyable morning of music, memories, tea and chats. This is a free event.
The Art of Living, a documentary celebrating creativity as we age will premiere in The Gate Cinema Mallow at 11am on Wednesday 24th May. Created by Cork based filmmaker Cormac O’Connor, the documentary features Clare Greene, Maureen Prendergast, Jim Savage, Emily Murphy, Liz Downes, Marian Britton, The Hegarty Family and Brigid Madden. The Art of Living is free to attend, no booking necessary. After the premiere the film will be available to view on Cork County Council’s YouTube channel.
Cork County Council Library and Arts Service is also hosting a series of free creative and cultural workshops across the county this May. Dress Historian and Historical Clothing-Maker Melissa Shiels will deliver talks on Georgian clothing and activities in Newmarket and Charleville libraries, and the Victorian period in Cobh Library. Meanwhile arts, crafts and storytelling workshops will be held in Youghal, Baile Bhuirne, Dunmanway, Skibbereen and Kanturk libraries.
Folklorist and artist Michael Fortune will facilitate a unique workshop in Mitchelstown Library for people interested in collecting oral history and folklore, using their phones to record, edit and present their findings. Michael will help participants to use free and easily accessible methods on their own phones and tablets. It is also an opportunity for like-minded people to meet each other and share their interested in local history and folklore.
