Installation works are underway by Cork County Council on the new pontoon for Schull Harbour. If you have noticed a large barge in the harbour it is for the ongoing piling works. The pontoon is 20 metres long is designed for short term berthing of small marine leisure craft.
Schull harbour is extremely busy in summer with a large number of marine leisure craft vying for very limited pier space, given that this is also an active fishing harbour. This pontoon will relieve some of that pressure, as it give sailors & other leisure users of small craft a place for short term berthing. It will also provide enhanced access to the water, with access bridge & gangway, leading to the new pontoon.
The pontoon project is being carried out under two separate contracts:
1. Manufacture/Supply of pontoon, gangway, access platform, costing €159,913.53 grant aided by Town & Village Renewal Scheme & Cork County Council.
2. Installation of Pontoon: this includes civil/structural works at a cost of €475,956.99, grant aided by Department of Agriculture Food & Marine, and Cork County Council.
