Air Pollution


  • The Air Laboratory is located at Inniscarra Waterworks, Inniscarra, County Cork. It was established in 1989 to implement the provisions of the Air Pollution Act, 1987. It was the first dedicated local authority air monitoring unit in the country. The work undertaken incorporates the following:

    • Operation of a dedicated air monitoring laboratory for the purpose of industrial inspections, sampling and analysis.
    • Sulphur dioxide and smoke sampling and analysis SI 244, of 1987. This will be replaced by SI 271 of 2002, which involves sulphur dioxide and particulate matter 10 microns (pm 10) from 2005.
    • Ambient dust monitoring of quarries, building developments and unloading of ship cargoes.
    • Smokeless fuels inspections and sampling (SI 118/98).
    • Dealing with public complaints in relation to air pollution issues.
    • Responding to industrial incidents.
    • Licensing of specified activities and enforcement of these licenses, through monitoring and evaluation of submitted industrial monitoring data.
    • Environmental reporting for planning permits.
    • Monitoring and enforcement of planning conditions.
    • Preparation of evidence for criminal and civil proceedings, oral hearings and attendance as expert witnesses.
