Renowned Cork Poet Theo Dorgan will be the guest speaker next Monday night 23rd September at 8pm for the launch of Hidden Voices, by Penny Johnston and Jacinta Kelly, at St. George’s Arts and Heritage Centre on Church Street in Mitchelstown on the night.
The book documents archaeological investigations at 24 sites on the route of the M8 motorway, traversing broad plains of rich pastureland and the western foothills of the Kilworth Mountains.
From Mesolithic nomad fishing people to Neolithic farmsteads, from Bronze Age homes and burial sites to the rare find of an Iron Age example at Caherdrinny, excavations of an early medieval cliff-edge Fort at Ballynacarriga, cob-built houses and a blacksmith at Gortnahown move the story into the historical era. The iron-working evidence indicates highly specialised bell manufacture and brazing in the area.
‘Hidden Voices’ gives us a rare window into the day-to-day life, work and beliefs of the communities who came before us, occupying this landscape over the last 10,000 years.
All are warmly welcome to attend the launch of this publication which is a joint initiative of Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland
