Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Danny Collins has opened a Book of Condolence in memory of Teddy McCarthy.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Danny Collins, accompanied by Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey signing a Book of Condolence in memory Teddy McCarthy.

On opening the Book of Condolence, Mayor Collins said,

On behalf of the people of Cork County and Cork County Council, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Teddy McCarthy, whose untimely passing on Tuesday has left us all deeply saddened. Teddy McCarthy was a name known and revered in sporting households across the nation, and his legacy will forever be etched in our hearts.

A true giant in the rich sporting tradition of our county, Teddy's legend will live on. His remarkable achievements on the field have made an indelible mark on the history of Irish sport. Mr. McCarthy's four All-Ireland medals, two of which were earned in 1990, stand as a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication. It is worth noting that Teddy remains the only male GAA player to have achieved the remarkable feat of winning All-Ireland titles in both hurling and football championships in the same season. As time goes on, it becomes increasingly evident that his extraordinary accomplishment in 1990 may never be replicated.

During this time of profound loss, let us remember Teddy's family—his beloved wife Oonagh, his children Cian, Niall, and Sinéad—as well as the entire Cork GAA community who mourn his departure. To all his family, friends, and loved ones, please accept my deepest condolences.

As we open this book of condolence in honour of Teddy McCarthy, let us come together as a community to pay tribute to his life and the profound impact he had on Cork, on GAA, and on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit continue to inspire us, and may his memory be a source of strength and solace in the days ahead.
