Every year Cork County Council’s Fire Service runs a Primary Schools Fire Safety Programme. Due to current restrictions it has not been possible to visit schools to deliver this programme in the usual way. Instead, the Fire Service in conjunction with National Fire Safety Week 2020 from the 5th to 11th October, is running a competition for primary school children in County Cork.

This year the theme for Fire Safety Week is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives”. The competition runs from Monday 7th September to Monday 5th October with winners to be announced during National Fire Safety Week.  Each week a selection of submitted art work will be featured on the Cork County Fire Service Facebook page.

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley encouraged children across the County to get involved, saying,

“Fire safety education is very important, and this competition is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness among our youngest citizens of fire safety in a fun and entertaining way. And there are great prizes to be won. The details of the competition were distributed to all primary schools in the county in early September.”

Cork County Council Chief Fire Officer Sarah Silke, co-ordinator of the competition, added,

“This competition is for all primary school aged children within Cork County, including any home-schooled children. Junior infants to second class are invited to colour a picture while third class to sixth class will have to put a little thought into the design of a drawing/poster with a fire safety message. We hope to bring attention to the importance of fire safety in the home and fire safety week through this competition and everyone in Cork County Fire Service is excited to see the wonderful artwork that the children of Cork create.”

Gach bliain reáchtálann Seirbhís Dóiteáin Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí Clár Sábháilteachta Dóiteáin Bunscoileanna. Mar gheall ar shrianta reatha níorbh fhéidir cuairt a thabhairt ar scoileanna chun an clár seo a sheachadadh ar an ngnáthbhealach. Ina áit sin, tá an tSeirbhís Dóiteáin i gcomhar leis an tSeachtain Náisiúnta Sábháilteachta Dóiteáin 2020, ag reáchtáil comórtais do pháistí bhunscoile.

Is é téama na Seachtaine Sábháilteachta Dóiteáin i mbliana ná “Sábhálann Aláraim Dheataigh atá ag obair i gceart Saoil”. Ritheann an comórtas ón Luan 7ú Meán Fómhair go dtí an Luan 5ú Deireadh Fómhair agus fógrófar buaiteoirí le linn na Seachtaine Náisiúnta um Shábháilteacht Dóiteáin, a bheidh ar siúl óna 5ú go dtí an 11ú Deireadh Fómhair 2020. Gach seachtain beidh rogha d’obair ealaíne curtha isteach le feiscint ar leathanach Facebook Sheirbhís Dóiteáin Chontae Chorcaí.

Tugann Méara Chontae Chorcaí, an Comhairleoir Mary Linehan Foley spreagadh do leanaí ar fud an Chontae chun páirt a ghlacadh, ag rá,

“Tá oideachas sábháilteachta dóiteáin ana-thábhachtach, agus is deis iontach é an comórtas seo chun feasacht a mhúscailt i measc ár saoránach is óige ar shábháilteacht ó dhóiteán ar bhealach spraíúil siamsúil. Agus tá duaiseanna iontacha le buachaint. Dáileadh sonraí an chomórtais ar gach bunscoil sa chontae go luath i mí Mheán Fómhair. "

Dúirt Príomh-Oifigeach Dóiteáin Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí Sarah Silke, comhordaitheoir an chomórtais, an méid seo a leanas:

“Tá an comórtas seo ann do gach leanbh d'aois bhunscoile i gContae Chorcaí, lena n-áirítear aon leanaí a fhoghlaimítear sa bhaile. Tugtar cuireadh do naíonáin shóisearacha go rang a dó pictiúr a dhathú agus iarrtar ar pháistí ó rang a trí go rang a sé machnamh a dhéanamh ar dhearadh líníochta / póstaeir le teachtaireacht sábháilteachta dóiteáin. Táthar ag súil go ndíreofar aird ar thábhacht na sábháilteachta dóiteáin sa bhaile agus aird ar sheachtain sábháilteachta dóiteáin é féin tríd an gcomórtas seo agus tá gach duine i Seirbhís Dóiteáin Chontae Chorcaí ar bís an saothar ealaíne iontach a chruthaíonn leanaí Chorcaí a fheiscint.
