Temporary Closing of Public Roads

ROADS ACT, 1993

Temporary Closing of Public Roads – N72 National Secondary Road – Ballymaquirk Junction Upgrade.

Notice is hereby given that Cork County Council is considering, pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993, the temporary closure of the following road to public traffic as detailed below for the duration specified. The closure is necessary to facilitate junction upgrade works on the N72 at Ballymaquirk Cross, Ballymaquirk, County Cork and in the interest of public safety.

Road to be Closed

The R579 Regional Road from between Ballymaquirk Cross and the Bridge crossing the River Blackwater (on route to Banteer). 

L1541-11, L5783, L57831 Garryantaggart, Cronavan, Killamurren.

Period of Closure

From Monday 24th July 2023 at 06.00 hrs to Monday 13th November 2023 at 06.00 hrs (or such earlier date as may be determined by Cork County Council).

Reason for Closure

To facilitate the proposed junction upgrade on the N72 National Secondary Route and in the interest of public safety.

Alternative Routes (Cars and Light Goods Vehicles)

  • Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) to Banteer (R579)

Traffic travelling from Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) to Banteer (R579) shall turn off the N72 and onto the L1121 at Roskeen for Gortmore and continue on the L1121 South and take the first right on the Clonmeen Road heading East towards Banteer. Continue along this route passing the Clonmeen Cemetery joining back onto the R579 at Banteer. 

  • Banteer (R579) to Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) 

Traffic travelling from Banteer (R579) to Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) shall turn off the N72 and onto the Clonmeen Road at Banteer and continue East. Continue along this route passing the Clonmeen Cemetery turning left at the T junction with the L1121. Continue on the L1121 joining back onto the N72 at Roskeen. 

Alternative Routes (Heavy Goods Vehicles)

  • Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) to Banteer (R579)

Traffic travelling from Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) to Banteer (R579) shall turn off the N72 and onto the R621 Cork Racecourse. Continue along the R621 heading South and turn onto the R619 at Newberry Industrial Estate. Continue along the R619 heading through Dromahane, past Ballysimon Cottages and straight through An Sraide Bhaile. At Denis J. Downeys truck yard bear left continuing along the R619, then bear right at New Tipperary and follow the R619 through Donoughmore, this will return traffic back onto the R579 at the next T junction. Traffic travelling to Nad and Banteer turn right and traffic travelling toward Cork City turn left. 

  • Banteer (R579) to Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) 

Traffic travelling from Cork City/Berrings/Tower/Healys Bridge/Banteer/Nad to Killarney (N72), Mallow (N72) and Kanturk (R579) turn onto the R619 for Donoughmore. Follow the R619 through Donoughmore bearing left at New Tipperary. Follow the R619 around to the right at Denis J. Downeys truck yard and continue on this route through An Sraide Bhaile and past Ballysimon Cottages. This route will bring you through Dromahane turning left onto the R621 at Newberry Industrial Estate. The R621 will meet the N72 at Cork Racecourse, traffic travelling to Killarney and Kanturk turning left, traffic travelling to Mallow turning right. 

The diversion routes will be fully signposted. Local access will be maintained.

Any person interested may lodge an objection in writing with the undersigned not later than 10 am on Friday 7th, July 2023.
