Municipal District Operations and Rural Development Directorate Activities Report 2022

Cork County Council’s Municipal District Operations and Rural Development Directorate delivers a wide range of strategic and operational services at a local level across the county. The directorate is responsible for delivering frontline services in a collaborative manner in conjunction with Municipal District members, community and business stakeholders. 

The Directorate provides a wide variety of services which include the strategic enhancement of public realm, placemaking, town and village enhancement, tackling vacancy/dereliction, promoting property activation in conjunction with the Property Activation & Regeneration Unit, parking management, street cleaning, litter control, burial grounds, parks/open spaces/playground maintenance, Greenways, beaches and coastal operations, piers/harbours, supporting our island communities, as well as being a key driver of climate action and environmental sustainability measures. 

Municipal Districts are also responsible for the delivery of transformational initiatives funded through national funding programmes which include the delivery of ambitious projects under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund, Rural Regeneration Development Fund, Town and Village Renewal Scheme, Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, and Clár. 

In 2022, the General Municipal Allocation (GMA) fund allowed the continued support of circa 600 groups which saw the many projects supported, categorised under Amenity Grants, Capital Grants and Community Contract Schemes. Initiatives such as streetscape enhancement and painting schemes were also rolled out.

The Directorate also incorporates Cork County Council’s Architects Department and Library and Arts Service which provide essential community development and support services throughout the county.
