Africa Day 2025

Join us in the run up to Africa Day 2025 with a week-long celebration of music, dance and storytelling events taking place in libraries across the county!

Africa Day is an annual worldwide celebration of the people, cultures, and potential of the African continent. Each year on 25th May, Local Authorities across Ireland host a variety of cultural, artistic, and family-friendly events, which also include contemporary African Irish culture.

AHA Storytellers at Carrigaline Library

Saturday 17th May from 2:00pm – 4:00pm

AHA Storytellers, a troupe from Carlow, will perform a special show of music, dance, and storytelling in Carrigaline Library. The nine performers, led by Jolly O’Rock, will share the diverse culture and folklore of Africa in a fun, interactive, and educational way.

All are welcome and no booking is required.

Music Concert with Kiruu at Briery Gap, Macroom

  • Tuesday 20th May from 8:00pm

Kiruu is a singer, guitarist and pianist whose music combines influences from his mixed cultural background of Ireland, the Mediterranean, and East Africa.

He released his album Super Feo Express in 2019, and his latest single Kyanit, released in April 2025, is a funky banger that effortlessly blends elements of pop, disco, and rock to deliver a rhythmic story of lifelong unrequited love. It is available on all streaming platforms.

Having spent his formative years in East Africa, Kiruu's music incorporates East African Rumba, Afro-beat, Bembe, and the Swahili language. Kiruu has performed at Electric Picnic, All Together Now, Culture Night, Africa Day, Bloom, Healing Hearth, Planet Rhythm, Fuinneamh, Ealu Le Grá, Body and Soul, and more.

African Drumming Workshops

Patrick from African Drumming Ireland returns this year with his extremely popular African drumming workshops! These workshops are free to attend, but booking is advised as spaces are limited.
