Abandonment of a Public Road

Cork County Council, as a Roads Authority, has the power to abandon local roads. This function is reserved to the Elected Members and entails public consultation. The Minister, following consultation with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) must however approve an Order to abandon a national or regional road. Once a road has been abandoned, the Road Authority is no longer responsible for its maintenance but the abandonment does not affect the public right of way over the road, which continues to exist.
